The 60-second verdict
About 27% of inbound calls to home-service contractors go unanswered, and a missed sales call can represent roughly $1,200 in expected revenue (a benchmark, not a guarantee; see how to run your own number). Both options aim to stop that leak.
- Pick Smith.ai if you want live human receptionists, bilingual English/Spanish coverage, or a general answering service you configure yourself, and your call volume is modest.
- Pick ProClientFlow if you run an HVAC, plumbing, electrical or roofing shop and want someone else to build, run and tune trade-specific lead response so jobs land on your calendar.

What per-call pricing looks like at contractor volumes
Smith.ai bills its human receptionist plans per call, not per minute. Its published entry plan is $300 a month for 30 calls, with $11.50 for each additional call. Here is the math on that plan (our calculation from published rates; plans change, so check smith.ai/pricing):
| Calls per month | Estimated Smith.ai cost ($300 / 30-call plan) |
|---|---|
| 30 | $300 |
| 60 | about $645 |
| 100 | about $1,105 (a higher plan tier may be cheaper) |
Heat waves, cold snaps and storms are when contractors get the most calls, which is also when per-call overage adds up. ProClientFlow is sold as a fixed-price setup plus a monthly retainer; see current prices on the Done-For-You Setup and Monthly Managed Retainer pages.
Where Smith.ai is the better fit
- You want a live human to answer every call, with the option of a hybrid AI plus human setup.
- You need bilingual English/Spanish answering.
- You want recordings, transcripts and summaries, and integrations such as Calendly, Acuity or Zapier.
- Your volume is low enough that a small per-call plan costs less than a retainer.
Where ProClientFlow is the better fit
- Trade-specific. Emergency versus routine triage, service-area checks, and job-type and urgency questions for HVAC, plumbing, electrical and roofing. See the Emergency Call Triage Scripts Pack.
- Done-for-you. We configure, run, monitor and tune it. You do not configure another tool.
- Booked jobs, not call counts. We report on appointments on your calendar, and cover missed-call text-back and quiet-lead follow-up, because answering is only part of recovering revenue.
How onboarding works
- Fill out the onboarding intake form: trades, service area, hours, calendar.
- Join a kickoff call to confirm job types and emergency rules.
- We configure the AI lead response and booking calendar integration.
- We monitor real conversations and tune the rules.
- You see booked jobs reported on a regular basis.
Frequently asked questions
Smith.ai has real humans. Does ProClientFlow?
Smith.ai offers live human receptionists and a hybrid option, and that is a real strength. ProClientFlow is a managed AI lead response service: we configure, run and tune it for you. Ask us on a call exactly how emergencies and escalations are handled for your shop before you buy.
Smith.ai starts at $0. Why would I pay more?
The AI plan is free or cheap for light usage, and that covers only a small number of calls. Human and hybrid plans are billed per call with overage, so cost grows as call volume grows. Use the worked example above with your own call count.
I already use Jobber or Housecall Pro. Does that matter?
We book jobs onto your calendar. Tell us which calendar and tools you use on the intake form and we will confirm what we can connect before you commit.
Will AI sound robotic or book bad jobs?
That is what the setup and tuning are for. We write trade-specific qualification rules (job type, urgency, service area), review real conversations, and adjust them over time.
I am not technical. Do I have to configure anything?
No. You fill out an intake form and join a kickoff call. We handle the configuration, monitoring and tuning.
Can I just buy the playbooks and do it myself?
Yes. The Emergency Call Triage Scripts Pack, Speed-to-Lead Templates and the AI Prompt Library are the do-it-yourself rung of the ladder. Done-for-you is for owners who would rather not build it.
